Soundscapes

Matt says I never put interesting links in my blog, so here’s one:

I stumbled across it after my friend RLB sent me a link to Evelyn Glennie‘s TED talk. She’s an amazing percussionist who happens to be deaf (though not entirely, I think).  She wants people to listen, and not just to sounds.

Anyway, the sound thing is a big deal — birds make you happy, loud neighbors make you crazy, and I now have an office space I share with another person who also talks on the phone. Recent research shows that it’s really hard to ignore half a conversation (for example, http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/28/health/research/28perceptions.html).

My officemate’s latest call (while I was present) was about MBSR, or mind-body stress reduction, which is a technique to physically and mentally reduce stress. Of course, it was in Swedish, which made it hard for me to eavesdrop, but I had to try!

It’s super cool to have an office!
